Why is Sisters-In-Motion Memphis sponsoring the Sisters-In-Motion 5K Run/Walk?
After running many races - 5Ks, 10Ks, marathons and half marathons - SIM members decided that we too could organize a successful race incorporating all of the things we had learned from past races and adding our own special touch. Thus, a group of SIMs set out to do the research necessary to sponsor a 5K race in Memphis.
As African American women fitness enthusiasts, we wanted to support a health-related cause that impacts us as a group. Infant mortality became that cause. Our city leads the nation in infant deaths with 12.7 deaths per every 1000 births, or 1.9 times the national average. In Shelby County, African American babies die at three times the nationwide infant mortality rate. Within the county, the 38108 and 38127 zip codes, which inspired the name of the race, suffers the most premature infant deaths.
We looked at a number of organizations devoted to reducing infant mortality. Meeting the leadership of the Christ Community Health Services (CCHS) Women's Health Iniatitives/Infant Mortality program, located at 2861 Broad Avenue, Memphis, TN, and touring the facility convinced us that CCHS provided the services and possessed a strategy that could successfully reduce the rate of infant mortality in Memphis. We were particularly impressed with their holistic approach, which includes prenatal care, education and involvement of both parents in prenatal groups. After careful consideration, we decided to partner with Christ Community Health Services.
All proceeds from the race will benefit the Christ Community Health Services (CCHS) Women's Health Iniatitives/Infant Mortality. Please join us as we help Christ Community address the pressing Infant Mortality crisis in our community.
